Can I Use a Windows 10 Key to Activate Windows 11?

One of the most common questions we get is whether an old Windows 10 product key can be used to activate a fresh installation of Windows 11. The answer is yes, but with a few important caveats.

The Free Upgrade Path

Historically, Microsoft allowed users to use Windows 7, 8, and 10 keys to activate Windows 11. However, Microsoft recently closed the loophole for Windows 7 and 8 keys. Fortunately, genuine Windows 10 Retail keys still work to activate Windows 11.

How to Do It

Simply install Windows 11 from a bootable USB. When the setup prompts you for a product key, enter your 25-character Windows 10 key. If the key is valid and hasn't been blocked, Windows 11 will activate with a digital license.

What if it Fails?

If you get an error (like 0xC004C060 or 0xC004F213), it means your Windows 10 key was an OEM key tied to an old motherboard, or it was a fake Volume key that Microsoft blacklisted.

In that case, you'll need a new key. You can purchase a genuine Windows 11 Pro key from Digitecheps and get activated instantly.
