OEM vs Retail vs Volume Licensing: The Ultimate Cheat Sheet

When shopping for software keys, you'll encounter three main terms: OEM, Retail, and Volume. Buying the wrong one can lead to activation errors. Here is the ultimate cheat sheet.

1. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

OEM keys are intended for system builders (like Dell or HP). They are cheaper, but they bind permanently to the motherboard. If your motherboard dies, the key dies with it. It cannot be transferred to a new PC.

2. Retail

Retail keys are what you buy in a box at a store. They are tied to your Microsoft Account, not the hardware. You can transfer a Retail key to a new PC in the future (provided you uninstall it from the old one).

3. Volume / MAK

Volume keys are for large corporations activating hundreds of PCs. They are strictly illegal for consumer resale. If you buy a $5 Volume key on eBay, it will eventually be blacklisted by Microsoft.
