User CALs vs Device CALs

• User CAL: Licenses a specific human being. That person can access the SQL server from their desktop, laptop, and phone using only one User CAL.
• Device CAL: Licenses a specific piece of hardware (like a shift-work computer). Any number of different employees can use that computer to access the SQL database using only one Device CAL.

Do You Need CALs for Web Apps?

If you are running a public website where thousands of anonymous users access the SQL database indirectly through your web server, the Server+CAL model is legally impossible to track. Instead, you must purchase the incredibly expensive Core-Based Licensing model.
